March 7th - Great Gathering on a Blustery Day

Was a great day to get together and work INSIDE.  Susie had the room warming up for us by the time we all were arriving.
Lorraine was telling Susie how it was her fault......

and showing her this crazy set of hexies that Lorraine had gotten.  Susie gave a Hexie program at the Clay Center Piotique Quilters Guild last year and it was full of different ways to do hexies.  Lorraine got this set from Sew Easy, but not sure where at.

Setting up was going on up and down the tables.

Lisa got close to the fire to work on her applique.

Barb had sent the patterns for the purses that she had shown us last year.  Thank you Susie for bringing them in.  If you are interested in taking home a set of directions and copying them for yourself, please see Machelle.

Was not long and we had to set up a couple more tables.  YEAH!!!!!

Esther was able to come and she was working on fixing some blocks in this quilt.  You'll see more of it during the show 'n tell pictures.

Deb was working on her rail blocks.

I gave a demo on how to do the setting triangles for the basket weave rail fence using either the Fons & Porter triangle ruler, Companion Triangle or a plain square ruler.  If you were unable to come and would like a copy of the hand out - please let me know.

Deb T. had some blocks squared up and ready to go, so we also got a chance to show how to lay your blocks out.

Carol was working on squaring up her rail fence blocks.

Deb O. was working on sewing up strips for a project that she is working on.

Machelle is also working on rail fence blocks.  Had the rails cut and was deciding how to set together.

Cyndy (a relative of Machelle's) was able to join us and I hope got the feed back that she wanted on this darling quilt she is working on.

Susie had picked up a pattern in Houston and was working on her first block.

Here is the pattern and arrow points to the block Susie is currently doing.  Remember, you can click on a picture and have it come in a bit larger.

Juanita was able to join us.  Her project is a wool applique.

During lunch we spoke about the new/older rug at the front door that Susie had donated.  Less chance of tripping on this one.
Deb had donated a coffee pot and the old one was tossed.  Now which Deb?  T or O?
Susie was donating a very large heavy ironing board and the decision was made that we would get dimensions and pictures of how to make a big board to place on top and hopefully, Marc will make us one.  Then Lisa will get it covered.
We need a new design wall.  Several ideas were tossed around before Esther asked if we would like hers.
Thank you everyone for helping us to outfit a great area to get together and work on our projects.

After lunch was Show 'n Tell:

Deb has been busy making aprons from some fabric that was given to her.  The inset picture is a hat.  She made one and then the other grands begged for one.  Not sure how many she has made now.

Lorraine has learned never to say never.
She was never going to do anything like crazy quilting with scraps and she did not like "little" things.
As you can see with this small table topper - don't say never.

Many years ago, Lorraine had started some red work.  She now has them finished and quilted into wall hangings.  Great job Lorraine.

Remember our 4 square blocks last year?  Lorraine finished her quilt.......her son saw it and loved it, so now Lorraine has made this one for him.  Note how she did her setting triangles and made them float the blocks.  Susie quilted, click to get a closer look at the lovely design.

This is the quilt that Cyndy was working on and needed some input on.  Isn't it darling?  You have got to love those purses.  They have a velcro closing and are usable.  Wonder what the young lady will put in them.  Susie says - mom, watch for hidden candy before you wash this quilt.

Cyndy also had made a multi-pouch bag to see if she liked it, and many outfits for the 18" doll.  Some of the clothes are made from family members garments.  They looked so good and some of them were even lined.  Lucky youngins.

This is the quilt that Esther was working on to mend some of the blocks as seen in the inset.  Her mother had made this polyester quilt from dresses she had and shirts from Esther's father.  What a wonderful memory quilt to treasure.

Carol's daughter Sara, made this blanket to send to the Texas relief and as it is going off soon, Carol wanted to bring it in for show.  Don't you just love how Sara used all kinds of scraps to do the backing?

Susie had told us about a block carrier that some woman had for sale for oodles of bucks - well between Susie and Marc, they made a much less costly one.  The end screws off so that you can put your threads and such in the tube.

Forget which auction Susie said she got this quilt top at, but now it is quilted and finished and looking great.

Janet, this shot is for you.  The twilling BOM that the PQG has been doing for two years thanks to Susie, had the blocks trimmed down to I think 14" and Susie thought it made it too crowded looking, so she trimmed hers down to 16 1/2" and this is what the top looks like.  Susie said the inside border really helps show it off.  Forgive the poor quality of the picture, this is only a top and the door window was right behind it.  Looking forward to seeing this quilted.

Susie had picked up another linen at a sale and added a border and quilted it up.

So sad to see all of this embroidery go to waste - good job Susie putting it into a lovely quilt.

Believe Susie said she got this embroidered table cloth at Ann Lee's auction.  Susie put it into a quilt.  Great way to save this beauty.

Click and see the close up of one of the corners.

Juanita's wool work we had to get a closer look at.

Instead of using fusible, pins or glue to adhere the pieces on, Juanita felted them on.  Look at this fabulous "rake" tool.  Saves your fingers when you are felting the pieces down with this umpteen needled thumper.  Juanita says that All About Quilts in Manhattan has them.  Go here to see the tools.

Machelle wanted to make a throw using the same technique with the 9-patch as she did on her daughters quilt.  Got it together; however, she has about 20 blocks extra she found later and would like to incorporate them.

Esther came to her rescue and asked her how about doing a different kind of boarder.
They tried out several different fabrics as first border to separate and such.....

and this is the lay out that Machelle will be working on.

In case you forgot or did not get to see the finished Morganville rail fence quilt set in the basket weave design - here it is complete.

Susie did a wonderful job on the quilting.

Hope you all had fun.  Sorry to miss seeing some of you, pray that you will be there next time.
Have a blessed month.
