FEBRUARY MEETING CANCELLED DUE TO COLD AND SNOW

After talking with some of the ladies - it is unanimous - no meeting tomorrow.  Machelle will be sending out an e-mail to let everyone know that we are cancelling February's meeting.

In March, we will be doing  Machelle's block.  Read below to see what you need to have cut for her block.  (If there is time, we will also do the quilted box shown at the bottom of the last post.)

*********************************************************************************

Kansas Troubles is a very old pattern associated with the border wars between Kansas and Missouri settlers before and during the Civil War.  Traditionally the block is made with red in it to represent “Bleeding Kansas”, as the tumultuous state was called in its territorial days.  There are records of the pattern being published in periodicals as far back as the 1890’s, but we do not know if this pattern actually existed during the Civil War.  However, it does symbolize the many challenges and difficulties settlers encountered while making their homes in Kansas.

The following is what you need to have cut and ready for Machelle's block for the March meeting:
As accuracy is very important with this block - if you have a stiletto or heavier long pin, bring it, Machelle found it really helps when you are sewing.
Light Background
2—3  7/8” squares.  Sub-cut each once diagonally to get 4 triangles.
8—1  5/8” squares.  Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of each square.
4—1  1/4” squares.
Black (or dark) for medium triangles
2—2  3/8” squares.  Sub-cut each once diagonally to get 4 triangles.
Red (or contrast) For Points.
12—1  5/8” squares.  Sub-cut only 4 of the squares once diagonally, to get 8 small triangles.
Machelle states that the picture of the block here is NOT hers!!!  Nor from the book-- but it’s a great picture and she likes the quilting.
Machelle got her pattern from "KANSAS SPIRIT   15 historical quilt blocks & the saga of the sunflower state" By Jeanne Poore.
This is going to be a very interesting block to make, thank you Machelle for working this one up.  We all will be looking forward to doing this and Susie's blocks.

Till next month - stay safe and warm.
