Such a wonderful start to the day, some of us thought we were going to have to canoe in for our meeting. But everyone arrived safe and what a fantastic day.
For those of you that could not make it - our prayers went up for you and of course we talked about all the mishaps and challenges facing each of you.
Our new "friend" - Pat, remember to bring in her H'Mong articles.
WOW!!! and WOW !!!! WOW !!!!!
Click on the pictures to have them come in a little larger so you can read the Pa Ndau murals
You can go to the following to read more about them.
Look at when the soldiers came into their villages in the upper left, to where they fled and later came to America. Between 1975 - 1980, many Hmong people died either from starvation or were killed by the North Vietnamese.
These are a few of the samples that Pat has in the embroidery work.
In USA, June 2004, there was a nice write up that Pat got from one of her aunts. The Hmong embroidery is as gorgeous as their applique is. Thank you Pat for sharing.
After a great cup of coffee (or two) at the restaurant, everyone got to work on their projects.
Deb is working on a bow tie quilt that she is making with fabric from Ties.
And what great friends she has. Machelle and Pat helped Deb Un-sew the ties in preparation for Deb's cutting and.....
placing them in her blocks. She had one on the table so that we could see how the ties were going to be used.
Esther had taken the disappearing 9-patch pattern and using 10" blocks, made this lovely quilt. Here she is squaring it up after it was quilted (sorry, forgot who did it).
Course in the middle of everything, we bombarded Esther with questions as to what was the news with her and Bruce.
Both Donnis and Pat had hand work to work on.
Remember last month when Pat sandwiched that crazy - crazy quilt?
Well here she is quilting it. Love the Sashiko style of quilting Pat has chosen to do it in.
As you can see here, every square has it's own style.
(Sashiko (刺し子?, literally "little stabs") is a form of decorative reinforcement stitching (or functional embroidery) from Japan. Traditionally used to reinforce points of wear, or to repair worn places or tears with patches, this running stitch technique is often used for purely decorative purposes in quilting and embroidery. The white cotton thread on the traditional indigo blue cloth gives sashiko its distinctive appearance, though decorative items sometimes use red thread.
Many Sashiko patterns were derived from Chinese designs, but just as many were developed by the Japanese themselves. The artist Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) published the book New Forms for Design in 1824, and these designs have inspired many Sashiko patterns.Copied from Wikipedia)

Shirley made it to be with us for lunch, and she brought in a book to share.
Thank you Shirley for bringing in this very interesting book. Wow! So many ways to lay out the Drunkard's Path blocks. And surprise, surprise.........this book is still available. Go here (click) to see about getting one for yourself or other books similar.
For Show 'n Tell, Esther got her quilt squared up and is working on the binding. Changing the sizes of the 9 Patches definitely gave us another look at the disappearing 9-patch pattern.
Donnis belongs to the Piotique Quilters Guild in Clay Center and they are doing a very unique Challenge this year. Can't say anymore - but Donnis lucked out on her 4 fabrics.
For being the oldest member of our group - Donnis is sure getting a lot done. Remember the blocks she was working on last month - well - it is finished. Love the cut glass depth and movement it has.
AND - she finished her retirement quilt of the Japanese latterns, the pattern she got from Susie. Only it grew on her and now it is for her bed at home.
WOW!!!!
Everyone of us oohed and awed this creation. Fantastic work Donnis.
Ann did her quilting. The wavy pattern made this quilt alive.
Donnis used an extra block for her label. (last names have been blocked out for safety).
Vevia has been working on a "biscuit" pattern that she got from Machelle. Lots of hand work, lots of buttons - AND - NO, she would never make another one. Funny, Machelle said the same thing.
However, it is unique and several have asked for the pattern. Remember - it's all in the fabric
Machelle brought in her folded star so Shirley could see. Perhaps in August we should all bring in anything that we have made or purchased that is in this style so that we can see all the possibilities.
Now for the rest of the Story!
