Classes and Guests add up to a GREAT day!

What a turn out for our class on "Tilted Log Cabins".  Donnis had 14 eager listeners giving her their full attention - scary or not - Donnis did fantastic!

 

 This class came about because of a quilt that Donnis had made from Lynne Edwards book.  Donnis said it was very easy and of course - something new, we all wanted to learn how.

Donnis had some examples to show us and get our creative juices flowing.

 So whether a table topper or a wall hanging - we had some wonderful finished projects shown us.

 As you can see here - start with a log cabin block, do a bit of whacking and you have a tilted log.

 And we were off........................................

 Esther's color choices gave us some future possibilities, hers is shown above the table runner that Donnis brought in as an example.

 Had to get Donnis in here with her browns and surprise yellow home position.  Love the contrast.  Thank you Jan for letting mom borrow your runner back to show us how color can really change the look.

 Don't get confused - we had THREE (3) Deb's with us for the day- our Deb shown above and two guest Debs.  This is sisters Lori on the left and Deb on the right.  Deb works and wasn't going to be able to come, at the last moment she got the day off.  Wonderful sis Lori shared her log cabin blocks so they both could learn the technique and produce a joint effort.  No fighting sisters on who gets the end results, which by the way are stunning.

 Susie's blocks are the three just above the single.  We had Susie turning and turning her blocks to see which way to put them together.  Don't know about Susie, but some of us where getting dizzy.

 Remember Lori and Deb?  This is another guest and their other sis - Idana.  Love, love, love her color choices in blue.  Sure hope we get pictures of finished projects from you ladies.

 Tah Dah!!!!  Guest number 4 and the third Deb - who we call Deb from Palmer.  Bonnie taught her how to quilt just "a couple of years ago" and since that is how Bonnie introduced us - poor Deb got the Palmer distinction even though she now resides in Linn.  Looking forward to pictures Deb - hint, hint, hint!

 Everyone claims that this person never gets her picture on the site - so here she is in two poses and of course her gorgeous blocks.  (Vevia for those of you who do not know, the camera person)

 Judy made two different color schemes, the two on the bottom, from left overs from her granddaughter's quilt.  Think we heard reversible some where in the future.

 We had a fantastic spread for lunch to share with our guests.  Thank you to everyone that brought something in.  Yum, Yum, was it good!

After lunch we shared another of our favorite past times - Show 'n Tell! 

Judy had brought in her finished top of  her granddaughter's quilt so that Susie could take it home and quilt it.  Don't know about the rest of you, but we enjoy seeing the before quilted as well as the after quilted.  Lovely batiks through out and great left overs for Judy's tilted log.

 Shirley brought in lots of Show 'n Tell for us to highlight the season coming up...can't decide which

 table runner I like the best............

 or the bag she brought them in.  Thank you Shirley.

 Donnis also shared with us her bargello wall hanging.  Isn't that lovely.  How many of us have always wanted to make one..............well, a wall hanging would be do-able.  Thank you for even more inspiration Donnis.

 Susie made the Jacobean/fantasy flower in a class that Vevia taught on different applique techniques and decided to showcase it on a bag.  Susie loved the Reynolds wrap technique for small pieces.

 Susie also brought in her current project called Japanese Star.  The stabilizer becomes part of the block..........

 as you add the strips of fabric to it.

 Crab Apple Hill has a gardeners alphabet block series and Susie has bought a couple of the blocks, Iowana is coloring them and then Susie is embroidering them.  The picture of the thread she is using is of the Premium Sulky 12 weight heavier thread (330 yards) that Susie is trying in stead of the DMC floss.  As you can see, it looks great.

Susie had read all the directions on the alphabet blocks and shared with us what she learned about smearing the coloring - you can correct it with a little baking soda, water and a Q-tip BEFORE you heat set the color.  Now that is a tip worth putting down in your hint book.

 

 Even though Lori did not bring a show and tell, we cornered her into giving us a quick how to demo on the lovely basket that she brought her work in.  Lori had seen it done in a shop and this technique did not use the cotton clothesline.  They had used fusible batting and folded and folded the fabric over it and then did the zig zag sewing to bring it all together.  The folding and batting gives it the firmness.

 Lori is such an animated demonstrator..........the basket is backwards so that we could get a good picture of what all your body has to contort to while getting the sides under the needle.  Thank you Lori for being such a good sport - we all enjoyed the antics.

It was a great day with great friends, lots of shared info and a great technique to learn.  Looking forward to seeing those finished tilted logs.  Till next month..........

Change of Plans - okee dokey!

What a great bunch we have.  .  .  change of plans or whatever - they can roll with it.  Missing out on tilting our logs - gave several the chance to get their log cabin blocks done.  Others brought plenty of handwork to keep them busy.  Binding, hand sewing together blocks, embroidery, twilling - lots of interests kept our group going.

 Iowana (along with Russ) got a chance to join us at lunch and Iowana brought along the pillow that Machelle had made her.  Machelle does wonderful chenille work, her crazy quilting is pretty good also.

 Deb was working on binding and managed to finish a couple.  Had to get a shot of this embroidery Sunbonnet Sue that she had made before she had any children - now it is going to be passed down to a granddaughter on her way.  Don't you just love the quilting that Ann H. did on this - the bows are fabulous.

 
Vevia has been a little bit busy.  This first one is a fun quilt for a grandson of his baby t-shirts done in a rag style.

This is a disappearing 9-patch that she will be donating to the Piotique Quilters Guild for their community service project this year.

Trying out new techniques gave Vevia this darling baby quilt.

Did you ever see Bonnie, Marcela or Erlene do the grid quilt?  The two runners (above and below) are using the same technique only on a smaller scale.......16 patches.

Color placement, then the cutting puts them on point with set in triangles.

Not all disappearing 9-patches need to be made with square 9-patches.  Here Vevia tried rectangles - totally different look.

This small table topper is what Vevia learned as a stack and whack in Florida.

This cute throw is the leftovers from a quilt donated to the Dance Company in Clay Center.  Again, cut up, sew back together and ta-dah - new blocks.

Kits don't always have to be made like they show, Vevia used less yo yo's from this pin cushion kit and it just as lovely.

Esther finished her Dresdan Star that Dee taught and completed the hand quilting. She did an awesome job.

 Esther also took left overs and with them made this darling table runner.  She also used this as an opportunity to try her hand at domestic machine quilting.  We all think she did great and many hints and suggestions were tossed around.  As with everything in quilting - try as many ways as possible till you find the one you like and works for you.

 Here is another quilt that Deb needs to bind.  See the close up below - it is from a panel that is to be made into a book.  Deb chose to put it into quilt form.  Wow, wow, wow!

 Remember the Blooming 9-patch?  Deb has finished another one - way different from her normal color modes.  This daughter wanted it in more neutral colors.  May look a little less "blooming", but it is still a show stopper.

 Jan had bought a kit once upon a time and decided today was the day to start putting it together.  She got one done.  Look at the pattern - very confusing AND did they cut those plaids right?  Looking forward to seeing this kit put together Jan.  It is called an Anvil block and with all those triangles - Good Luck!

 For those of you that did not understand Vevia when she spoke about the grid way of setting on point, here is a quick explanation.  Copy it and blow it up.  Was so much fun.  The 16 patches that has the colored in blocks is how she made the Christmas runner with setting triangles all the same color (that's where you cut).

 These two quilts, Esther had finished and mailed before our August meeting.  She sent us the pictures so that we could add them in here.  Boy - don't you wished you could have touched these and seen them up close - they are so cute.  Thank you Esther for sharing.
